The Mouth of Truth (La Bocca della Verità) is a marble face in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. It's believed that the 'Bocca' serves as a lie detector. Although the sculpture has been thought of everything from a waterfall to a man-hole cover in 1st century Rome, it gained its reputation in the Middle Ages. It is beleived that if you tell a lie with your hand in the mouth of La Bocca, then the sculpture will bite your hand off. Audrey Hepburn won an academy award for her betrayal of the innocent, yet rebellious princess, and this scene shows the essence of the character.
It is, by far, one of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies. And at some point in my life, I want to see it. I want to be there, see people play the timeless fake out game, and risk my own hand as I stick it in the mouth. It's definitely a bucket list item for me. So, the question is, does anyone want to take me?
