Just an FYI - When you’re doing a quiz, please read the question accurately. I gave the following question on a quiz yesterday, and more than 50% of the class gave me their family’s income category.
Please fix the following survey question: “Check the income category that includes your total family income last year. ____ Less than $15,000 ____ $15,000-$26,000 ____ $26,000-$49,999 ____ $50,000-$74,999 ____ $75,000 and more” FYI - I will never ask y’all your family income. I don’t care if you’re as rich as Midas or as poor as Job’s turkey. I want you to FIND THE PROBLEM with the survey question and FIX it. I want you to learn. I don’t need to know how much money your parents make.

Call for Applications for the American Advertising Federation (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) team for OSU: IT IS ALMOST TOO LATE!! Applications are due this Friday to apply for the best and most challenging learning experience in the area of advertising/strategic communications/marketing! Participating in NSAC can replace the SC campaign course. It is a serious commitment with extraordinary reward of hands-on professional experience unmatched in the traditional classroom. Completed applications are to be submitted in a PDF format to Dr. Bobbi Kay Lewis via email by next Friday, Sept. 16th at 5 p.m. In addition to submitting an application, you will need to sign-up for an interview by Friday, Sept. 16. The sign-up sheet will be located on Dr. Lewis’ office door (206A Paul Miler). Interviews will take place Sept. 20 and 22. The client is Nissan, and the task is to build a branding campaign targeting multicultural millennials. The case study for the campaign is available electronically upon request. Members of last year’s District Champion winning team will be at the next AdClub meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15, if you would like to ask them questions. The first week of my summer break consisted of handing out water bottles, sorting baby clothes, moving donations and delivering supplies. Doesn’t sound like the typical start of summer for a college student, but it was the best week of my vacation. What made it special was that I was helping people. When my professor told our class that she was going to Tuscaloosa to help with the relief I instantly wanted to go. Tuscaloosa is her hometown and you could feel the pain radiating from her when she told us about the destruction. I knew I had to help. I was a late joiner and it was a last minute decision. I didn’t know anything about the trip. All I knew was that we were going to help and leaving on Sunday. I went to visit my cousin, a trained military EMT, and persuaded him to come along.
It was remarkable how this week affected me. Since I had been dealing with such petty drama the week prior it was a eye opener to see true problems. This was a city that was flattened for blocks and blocks. I remember the smell. It wasn’t rotten it was just distinct. I noticed it the most when we were working out of a tent in the middle of rubble. The amazing part of this week was how southern hospitality remained intact. I felt like we were constantly being thanked or checked on to make sure WE were comfortable. These people have just witnessed a natural disaster and they were making sure WE were comfortable. I can say that if you plan on donating goods to a disaster be practical. It was hot in Alabama and we were sorting winter jackets. Yes these people have lost everything, but if you could try and wait to send those it would lift a weight off of the people working on site. Salvation Army was also a great presence at the sites. It was so amazing to see the kindness and the generosity. This was a week I will always remember. I learned that I may not be strong but I can still help. And I may not have a perfect life but I have a blessed one. - Allison Copens For this project you will work individually. The situation analysis included an assessment of the client’s internal environment, public perception of the client and the client’s external environment. For this project you will work in your teams. Your assignment is to produce a 5-10 minute podcast on an issue pertaining to this class. You can either interview an expert on the topic of social media (or a professor about their research interests) and make that interview available in form of a podcast, or discuss a social media & PR issue in your group and edit that discussion into a podcast. The goal of this project is two-fold: (1) to produce a meaningful audio resource on the topic of social media, and (2) to demonstrate that you possess the necessary skills to produce a podcast. You will be evaluated both on the content and the technical quality of the podcast.
The specific topic of your interview or your group discussion will depend on the area of expertise of your interviewee and/or your own area of interest. This is your time to be creative! If you decide to interview an outside source, be sure to develop your interview questions ahead of your interview and to phrase your questions in such a way as to avoid simple yes/no type answers. You will develop a creative idea, obtain footage, edit the video, add sound and text, and format it for distribution. Have fun with this one, it is your chance to be creative! Technical Notes • Length must be between 1-4 minutes (no more, no less) • Obscene material prohibited – push the envelope, but keep in mind the purpose of the video • Prominently mention our school, give the new website, and link the information to OSU so viewers know what the video is about if unfamiliar with the OSU. • Credits somewhere in the video (preferably at the end) list all the names of team members • Any music or material used must be done so legally (permission from artist) – provide credit for work used. Review Creative Commons licenses on images on Flickr or other image sites. • Write a short description and provide key words to accompany video when it goes on YouTube • You must have at least 5 transitions and 2 graphics. Tips • Understand the audience – inside jokes are good, but not so much if it leaves majority out • Be informational while entertaining, consider a humorous or musical approach • Use other videos as inspiration, but do not completely copy content or concept • Save and back-up all project files often Turning the Video In Submit your video to our Youtube page. I will view your video on YouTube. However, keep all files (the exported .mov/.avi file plus the source file (e.g., iMovie or Windows MovieMaker file) and write the video files to a CD ROM. If the team used a video editing program to edit the video, the team should turn in that project (e.g., iMovie or MovieMaker) file as well on the disk. The disk must have the final movie exported as a .mov or .avi. The short description and key words should be on the CD ROM in a text file. Drop off a copy of your CD or DVD to the Comm Arts office and ask that the disk be placed in my mailbox. Sample Viral Videos There is no “right way” to do this project. Be creative. Do it well. The video that receives the most likes on Facebook by the November 1st will get +2 points of adjustment to the viral video project grade. The video in second place with the second most number of views will get a +1 point adjustment to the viral video project grade. Yesterday, my students created and executed a flashmob to promote the name change of our college. It was an awesome, fun and incredible learning experience (for both them and me). For example, they learned how to contact the press, do a social media release, and that no matter how much you can prepare, there will almost always be something that goes wrong. I learned that I can't dance.... I flail. (And, apparently, there is video evidence to prove it.) At least we all learned something. It was a fun experience, and we got some press (which was our end goal), so it was definitely worth the while. Below you'll find a rough video from the dance. Understanding the basics of Photoshop are important in our line of work. Therefore, you will take three different pictures and alter them in Photoshop.
